Tamilnduadu:The anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power

The situation in Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu is tense as locals have renewed their agitation in a big way against the nuclear plant. They are protesting against the loading of nuclear fuel in the reactors, which is likely to get done over the next few days.

Once again, the simmering protest against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant has boiled over to the streets. Villagers tried to march to the plant, but were stopped by the police personnel. The villagers now plan to take the coastal route to lay siege to the plant.

There were tense moments on the coastline of the Idinthakarai village barely a kilometre away from the back side of the Kudankulam plant. The police asked the crowd to disperse but the crowd was not ready to budge until their demands were met.

Police did not arrest anyone as “our target is not the innocent women and children, who have been compelled to join today’s agitation, and we want to arrest only those who organise the agitations against the KKNPP in violation of the prohibitory orders,” Mr Das said.

Police sources said the “operation” might resume on Monday.

Meanwhile, Dr. Udayakumar told reporters that the activists would withdraw the agitation provided Chief Minister Jayalalithaa gave them an assurance that fuel-loading would be suspended.
