Assam violence: One killed in firing in Kokrajhar; bandh called by students’ union today
One person has died and five others have been injured in fresh violence in the Kokrajhar district of Assam. The area has been the epicentre of an ethnic flare-up that has ravaged the state in the last one month, claiming over 90 lives and leaving lakhs displaced.
The BTAD violence has spread to nearing Barpeta district as miscreants burnt down around five houses in Barpeta road area. There was some incidents of stone pelting in the area following a 12-hour bandh called by All Assam Muslim Students Union (AAMSU).
In another incident, four persons were injured in Manikpur in Bongaigaon district as bandh supporters tried to block national highway. Sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from Goalpara, Sonitpur and Sibsagar districts in Assam.
Meanwhile, one body was recovered at around 5 am on Tuesday near Salakati in Kokrajhar.
Five persons, including a woman and a 14-year-old boy, were injured when a group of 30 unidentified miscreants opened fire at Pakhartali village near Fakiragram Railway station in Kokrajhar at around 9-30 pm on Mondy. The group later fired at CRPF and BSF patrolling parties but fled under cover of darkness. The group even exploded crude bombs in the village.
In another incident, unidentified gunmen opened fire at Tokiamari village in Gosaigaon sub-division in Kokrajhar. One person was injured in the firing, said Kokrajhar DC Jayant Narlekar.
