A day after man killed five people, police hunt for motive
A day after a 25-year-old man allegedly killed five persons before committing suicide, police said the man Ravi was angry as he was not allowed to marry his sister-in-law’s younger sister.
Sources said Ravi had once tried kidnapping the younger sister, a class XI student, and force her into marrying him.
On Monday, Ravi had allegedly killed Renu Malik, her husband Naveen and their landlady Sheela Garg in Bindapur, before driving to Ghaziabad and shooting dead Renu’s father Harinder and her younger sister Baby. Ravi had then committed suicide.
On Monday morning only four bodies were discovered. Police later came across Naveen’s body under the mattress in their residence.
Doctors, who conducted the post-mortem examination of Naveen’s body, reportedly told police that Naveen was shot dead 12 hours before the autopsy. This has led investigators to believe that Naveen was killed on Sunday night.
Police said call records of Renu Malik’s cellphone show that she was present in the house at the time of Naveen’s murder. “We believe she too may have been involved in her husband’s murder. Naveen’s body was wrapped in a pile of clothes and tucked into the box space in the bed beneath the mattress on which Renu’s body was later discovered,” a police officer said.
Police said before her marriage to Naveen three years ago, Renu wanted to marry Ravi who was Naveen’s second cousin.
“When Renu conveyed her love for Ravi to her family, they opposed it as Ravi was unemployed. They married her off to Naveen. When they learnt Ravi was pursuing Renu’s younger sister Baby, they again refused,” the officer said.
“After her marriage, Renu began an affair with Ravi and would often visit his house. Naveen and Renu frequently fought over this,” he added.
According to police, Ravi had planned Naveen’s murder. On Saturday night, he was seen arriving in a Santro at Renu’s residence in Bindapur.
Dinesh, Sheela Garg’s son, said: “The two drove off and returned by 7 pm on Sunday. He stayed over that night. On Monday morning, we heard gunshots. When our mother ran upstairs, he was walking down the stairs holding two guns and asked her to move aside. When she refused, he shot her dead and pointed the gun towards us. We moved aside fearing he would kill us.”
Dinesh said he made a PCR call immediately, but by the time police arrived, Ravi had got away.
According to police, Ravi then went to his house in Vishwas Park, changed his clothes and left for Mayapuri on his motorcycle. In Mayapuri, he exchanged bikes with his friend and left for Ghaziabad, where he shot dead Renu’s father and sister.
“Renu’s mother escaped as she was not in the house at that time. Ravi tried escaping from there but was cornered by the crowd, which had gathered on hearing the gunshots. He then put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger,” the officer said.
Police have recovered eight cartridges from the house in Ghaziabad and three mobile phones.
