More than half of Assam under water, CM Tarun Gogoi in Japan
The flood situation in Assam has worsened and more than half the state is now under water. Over 15 lakh people have been rendered homeless while 12 people have been confirmed dead in the third wave of floods in the state.
The National and State Disaster Relief Forces as well as the Army and paramilitary troops are carrying out rescue and relief operations. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, however, is on a tour of Japan.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday enquired about the situation from the state government and assured it of all help in rescue and relief measures.
The Prime Minister called Assam’s Disaster Management Minister Prithvi Majhi to enquire about the situation in the state, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
He ‘expressed concern’ over the flood situation in Assam and assured the state government of all help in the rescue and relief operations, it said in a statement.
