Avalanches strikes on our soldiers
Eleven Army jawans comprised downed while seven other people are feared dead as avalanches struck two Army camps in Ganderbal and Bandipora districts of north Kashmir Valley. While eight were killed in Bandipora district, another three were entombed under the avalanche in Ganderbal district, the official said.
Lt. Col. J.S. Brar, spokesman of the Srinagar-based 15 corporations, told IANS: “Eight army troopers were killed and eight are still missing while 13 have been saved from the avalanche that affected the brigade military headquarters in Dawar village of Gurez subdivision of Bandipora Wednesday night.” Due to dense snowfall in Davar, no chopper movement is executable the Army said, adding together that they expect multitude of human death.
“Operations are still on to rescue the eight buried under the avalanche,” he said. Gurez is located 109 km from here. “Three soldiers of the Territorial Army, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed in another avalanche that struck an army camp late Wednesday night in Sonmarg resort in Ganderbal,” he added. Ganderbal is 87 km from Srinagar.
In a third avalanche, more a dozen hutments in Ramwari area of Ganderbal during the nighttime, but no more loss of life occurred in the incident.
The avalanche affected at 9.15 pm last night merely information about the disaster began filtering in this dawn as Gurez Valley is break off from rest of the country due to arduous snow during wintertime.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep condolences to the families of the dupes. He said he was sending his government minister with a face-to-face message of condolence to the Army’s Srinagar based 15 Corps General Officer Commanding (GOC) Lt Gen S A Hasnain.
Arduous snow over Jammu and Kashmir Valley, especially in fields closely to the Line of Control, had actuated authorities to bring out an avalanche admonishing for most arenas lying close to the mountains.
Based on stimulations provided by the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), the state disaster management cell has been bringing out day by day avalanche admonitions for the past 14 days for arenas placed 6,000 feet and higher up sea level.Accompanying the admonitions, the Divisional administration in Kashmir had asked the people not to venture call at these areas and to take precaution while traveling.
