Ghaziabad:14-year-old fails in exam, leaves suicide note on wall

A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday night after she failed in two subjects in her half-yearly examination.

Prerna Rai, a Class VIII student of St Paul’s School in Ghaziabad, wrote a suicide note on the wall of the bedroom in which she hanged herself.

The suicide note says: “Mummy, papa, mujhe pata hai ki main jo kar rahi hoon woh galat hai, lekin maine socha tha ki agar main pass nahi ho payi toh main jaan de doongi aur main Maths aur Chemistry mein fail ho gayi. Goodbye. (Mummy, papa, I know what I am doing is wrong, but I had thought that if I can’t pass my exams then I will kill myself and I failed in Maths and Chemistry. Good Bye.”)

Police said her body was discovered on Wednesday morning. “She went to her bedroom around 10 pm on Tuesday. In the morning, her parents went to her room to wake her up for school. They found her hanging from the ceiling fan with a piece of cloth,” an officer said.

Police said she was probably working too hard for her examination. “The family members told us that they never pressured on her. She was depressed because of the poor marks,” an officer said.

He said the family lives in Rajnagar and her father runs a grocery store in Ghaziabad.

A relative said: “Prerna was a hardworking child, but she couldn’t perform well in her studies. She always felt ashamed for this. Before every exam, she used to shut herself in a room. She kept to herself.”

Police said a post-mortem has been conducted and the report is awaited.
