With a performance late on Monday at the Marques de Sapucai Sambadrome, Unidos da Tijuca beat rival groups Salgueiro and Vila Isabel by a constrict margin.The successful performance, boasting seven vast drifts and 3 600 dancers and  many intricately configured floats before a capability crowd of 72,000 at the Sambadrome early Tuesday.

The Salgueiro school, in red and white colors, finished second, with a parade paying homage to Cord literature, a popular genre in the northeast.It highlighted the rich rural culture of the arid northeast, with a theme mixing traditional samba with the rythms of forro, a typical northeastern musical genre and dance.

Thirteen samba schools competed for the prestigious carnival title, graded in 10 fields including choreography, music and floats by a 40-member jury.

 

Some five million folks, admitting 850,000 tourists, are believed to have attended to the five-day Rio extravaganza, which ends Wednesday. Billed as “the greatest show on Earth”, the Rio Carnival also boasts hundreds of street bangs marked wild samba dancing and accented beer consumption.
